"The Directory of Experts," published by Broadcast Interview Source, 2233 Wisconsin Avenue NW, in Washington, D.C. 20007; 202-333-4904, is used by news shows to find experts on scores of subjects. Also there is: "Lesko's New Tech Sourcebook" (Harper and Row) to find experts in high-technology; "Dial an Expert" (McGraw-Hill), for addresses and phone numbers of experts in many consumer related fields; and "Consumer Index" (Pierian Press), to locate more than 250 toll-free "help lines" -- public service organizations and institutions offering assistance and resources across the board. These are 'hardcopy' sources; as an alternative and complement, experts on practically any field can be reached by means of something called "The Matrix."
The Matrix is the worldwide E-Mail network which properly subsumes the Internet, Bitnet, Fidonet, UUCP, USENET, Free-Nets, etcetera. So, as THE major comprehensive [if you can send mail to it, it's on the Matrix] all-inclusive Network of networks it should make sense that being familiar with the topology of The Matrix may very well be the most valuable asset in cyberspace.
[June 24, 2012]: The "Matrix," referring to the worldwide email network, not the movie, apparently is dead at this writing. The above I wrote several years ago when we had services like Gopher, FTP, and Telnet and search tools like Archie, Jughead and Veronica. Yes, way back then in the late 90's. So, much of this page is archival. However, for those interested in researching the Internet as it was then, an historical perspective, I think it may be a legitimate source. Life moves on and evolves, same for the Internet.
There are also Search Engines, some of which cater to finding *Persons and Addresses*. Another source for people, businesses and organizations are Phone Books, some of which are listed below.
